How to use
This calculator tells you whether a sofa, or anything box-shaped like a fridge, wardrobe or mattress, will fit through a doorway, round a corner in a hallway, or into a lift or a car, and which way to carry it.
- Choose A sofa or Something boxy, and enter its width, depth and height from the product page or a tape measure. For a sofa, add the arm height and seat depth. If the maker lists a diagonal depth, enter that too.
- Choose where it needs to go and enter its sizes: the doorway at its narrowest point with the door open; both hallways and the ceiling for a corner; or the space and its way in for a lift, a van or a car boot.
- Read the answer: whether it fits, which way to carry it (upright, on its back, on its end or tilted), and how much room is left at the tightest point. The drawing shows it in the doorway, round the corner or in the space, and See it in 3D shows it moving through, round or into it.
The calculator tries every way the item can be turned. A sofa too deep to go through upright and too high to go on its back can often still go through tilted, end first, using its diagonal depth. Round a corner, it also tries lifting the leading end towards the ceiling and standing the item on its end.
Sizes are taken as exact and the item as rigid, so leave a few centimetres for your hands and any wrapping. Taking the door off its hinges, or the legs off a sofa, often gains the room you need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure a doorway for a sofa?
Measure the width at its narrowest point, usually between the door stops, with the door open as far as it goes, because the door itself takes up some of the width. Measure the height from the floor to the top of the frame. Taking the door off its hinges usually gains a few more centimetres.
What is a sofa's diagonal depth?
It's the width a sofa needs when it's tilted through a doorway. Lay a straight edge from the top of the back to the front of the arm, and measure from the bottom of the back to that edge, at a right angle to it. If the doorway is wider than that, the sofa can usually go through tilted, end first.
Will it fit round a tight corner in my hallway?
Choose Round a corner and enter both hallways' widths and the ceiling height. The calculator finds the tightest moment of the turn and tries the item flat, with its leading end lifted towards the ceiling, and stood on its end. Long items often only get round when they're lifted or stood up.
