Strong Password Generator
Create strong random passwords or passphrases in your browser, one at a time or up to 1,000 at once. Choose length and characters. Nothing is stored.
Very strong about 130 bits of entropy
Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
How to use
This tool creates strong random passwords and passphrases on your own device.
Password
- A new password appears as soon as the page opens. Press Generate for another one.
- Set the Length with the slider or type a number from 8 to 128. Longer is stronger. 16 characters or more is a good choice for most accounts.
- Choose which characters to use: lowercase, uppercase, numbers and symbols. Every type you turn on is always included at least once, so the password meets most site rules.
- Turn on Leave out look-alikes if you need to read or type the password by hand. It skips characters that are easy to confuse, like I, l, 1, O and 0.
- Press Copy and paste the password into your password manager or the sign-up form.
- Need several? Set How many, up to 1,000. They're listed one a line: Copy all, or Download .txt.
Passphrase
A passphrase is a few random words, like maple-orbit-velvet-canyon-spruce-lemon-harbor. It is much easier to remember and type than a jumble of symbols. Seven words, the default, is strong: about 77 bits. Pick the number of words and the separator you like.
The strength line shows the entropy in bits, which measures how many guesses an attacker would need. Every 10 bits makes a password about a thousand times harder to guess. Aim for at least 70 bits, and 100 or more for important accounts.
Turn on Hide if someone can see your screen. Copy still works while the password is hidden.
Randomness comes from your browser's cryptographic generator. Your settings are remembered on this device, but passwords are never saved or sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to generate a password on a website?
Yes, as long as the password is created on your device. This page makes passwords in your browser with its built-in cryptographic random generator. Nothing is sent to a server or saved.
How long should my password be?
Use at least 16 random characters, or a passphrase of seven or more words. For accounts that protect money or email, go longer. A password manager can remember it for you.
Is a passphrase as secure as a random password?
It can be. Each word adds about 11 bits of entropy, so seven words is about 77 bits and eight words about 88. That is stronger than a random 12-character password of letters and digits, about 71 bits.
