How to use
This tool turns a title or any text into a slug: the short, readable part of a web address, like how-to-make-cafe-au-lait.
- Type or paste a title into Title or text. The slug updates as you type, with a preview of how it looks in a web address.
- Pick a Separator. Hyphens are the usual choice for web addresses and what search engines recommend. Underscores suit file names and some systems.
- Keep Lowercase on for web addresses, which are easier to type and compare in small letters. Turn it off to keep capitals, for example in a file name.
- Turn on Remove words like a, the, of to make long slugs shorter. If a title is made only of such words, they are kept.
- Set a Max length if your site has a limit. The slug is cut between words, never in the middle of one.
- Press Copy to use the slug.
Accents are removed, so "Crème brûlée" becomes creme-brulee and "Straße" becomes strasse. Russian, Ukrainian and other Cyrillic text is spelled out in Latin letters, and so is Greek. Letters from scripts without a simple Latin spelling, such as Chinese, Hindi or Korean, are kept as they are. Modern browsers show them correctly in web addresses.
Spaces, punctuation, symbols and emoji become a single separator. Apostrophes are dropped, so "don't" becomes dont rather than don-t. An ampersand becomes the word "and".
To make many slugs at once, put each title on its own line. You get one slug per line, ready to copy into a spreadsheet or content system.
Your settings are remembered on this device. Your text stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Use hyphens. Search engines read a hyphen as a space between words, so "coffee-grinder" is understood as two words. Underscores join words together, which can make them harder to match.
How long should a URL slug be?
Short and descriptive is best. Three to six words is a good target. Removing filler words like "the" and "of" usually gets you there without losing the meaning.
What happens to letters like ä, ß or ж?
Accented letters lose their accents, ß becomes ss and æ becomes ae. Cyrillic and Greek letters are spelled out in Latin letters, so Москва becomes moskva.
