3D Model Converter
Convert STEP, STL, OBJ, 3MF, PLY and glTF files to STL, OBJ, 3MF, PLY or GLB in your browser, one or many at once, in the right unit. No upload.
STL keeps the shape only: no colours, part names or unit. Slicers read it as millimetres.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.
How to use
This tool converts 3D models and CAD files from one format to another in your browser, one or many at a time, without uploading them.
- Choose the format under Convert to. The line below it says what that format keeps: STL keeps the shape only, 3MF, OBJ, PLY and GLB keep colours too, and OBJ and GLB keep textures.
- Add your files: drop them on the box or choose them. Add an OBJ together with its MTL file and pictures, and a glTF file with its .bin file, so nothing is lost.
- Each model is converted as soon as it's added. STEP, IGES and BREP files load the CAD reader, about 2 MB, the first time.
- STL, OBJ and PLY files don't store a unit. If yours were made in centimetres, metres or inches, say so under STL, OBJ and PLY files are in, and choose the unit to save STL, OBJ or PLY in. 3MF keeps the unit, and GLB is always in metres.
- For CAD files, Detail of curves sets how finely curved surfaces are cut into triangles.
- Download saves each model. An OBJ comes as a ZIP with its MTL file and pictures. Download all puts every model in one ZIP.
Printing formats (STL, 3MF and PLY) are saved with Z pointing up, as slicers expect, and OBJ and GLB with Y up, as 3D programs expect. Models are turned to match, so they stand the right way up.
Frequently asked questions
Can it convert STEP to STL?
Yes. STEP and IGES files describe exact curves, so the CAD reader cuts them into triangles, as STL needs. Choose Fine under Detail of curves for smoother curves and a bigger file. The size stays as it was in the CAD program.
Which format should I use for 3D printing?
3MF, if your slicer opens it: it keeps the parts, their colours and the unit. STL works with every slicer, but keeps the shape only and is read as millimetres.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Every file is read and converted in your browser, and nothing leaves your device. The CAD reader for STEP and IGES files is downloaded from this site the first time you need it, like the rest of the page.
