Edit PDF Metadata

See and change a PDF's title, author, subject, keywords, dates and language in your browser, or remove them all. Nothing is uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

How to use

This tool shows a PDF's document details, the properties a PDF reader lists, and lets you change them or take them out, in your browser.

  1. Add the PDF: drop it on the box or choose it. If it asks for a password, type it; it's only used here.
  2. The details appear in the form: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the app it was made in), Producer (what turned it into a PDF), when it was Created and Changed, and its Language.
  3. Change what you like. Leave a field empty to take that detail out. Now sets a date to this moment. Dates are in your device's time zone.
  4. To strip the file of its details, press Remove all. It empties every field and takes out the XMP metadata too, which can hold more than the form shows, such as the history of edits. Type a title afterwards if you want to keep one.
  5. Press Save PDF and download it, named like report-edited.pdf. Undo changes puts the file's own details back in the form.

Many PDFs keep their details twice: in the document information that older readers use, and as XMP metadata, which newer ones prefer. Both are changed together, so they always agree.

The title is what a browser shows in its tab when it opens the PDF, and what search engines often show for it, so a clear title helps. The language tells screen readers how to pronounce the text.

Frequently asked questions

Does editing the details change the document itself?

No. The pages, text, pictures, links and bookmarks stay as they were. Only the details change, though a digital signature stops being valid, as with any change to a signed file.

What does Remove all take out?

Every field in the form, any other details an app added that the form doesn't show (a company name, say), and the XMP metadata, which can also hold an edit history, the app's own notes or a document ID. The pages are untouched, so text inside them stays.

Why does my PDF reader still show the old title?

Check that you opened the downloaded copy, not the original. Some readers also show the file name instead of the title unless asked to show the title.
